Course Descriptions

Canine Search Solution's Three-Day Basic Tracking Course will provide handlers the opportunity to learn their patrol dog's true capabilities. Handler will be assisted in reading their dogs in and out of odor "negatives". Conduct tracks on hard surface, 24-hour old track, and thru high pedestrian traffic demonstrating the dog's ability to scent discriminate. Teams will be provided best practices on how to obtain scent from a scene, sample training logs, sample reports, and a component list of tracks applicable to their patrol response.

Canine Search Solution's Three-Day Advanced Tracking Course is for the patrol K9 team who has completed the Three Day Basic Course (with CSS) and will build on the skills learned. Teams will conduct a 48-hour old track, track into and out of buildings, from human remains to simulate a homicide track, and how to track tactically with several back up officers or SWAT.

Class size is limited for an optimal K9 team to Instructor ratio and allows for teams to conduct multiple tracks each day.

K9 Slim Scent Specific Trailing Scholarship

K9 Slim was a dual-purpose patrol dog handled by City of Madison Police Officer Carren Corcoran Gummin from 2010-2020. K9 Slim excelled at scent specific trailing, in large part due to his initial training in the Kocher Method and Carren even attempting "the difficult tracks" asked of them. K9 Slim passed away on December 27, 2022 at 14 years of age. He had a profound effect on all that worked with him. K9 Slim opened minds and demonstrated the limitlessness of a well-trained dog and a handler who would work outside the box when needed.

This scholarship will provide a Dual Purpose Patrol Dog team with $350 towards attendance at a Basic Scent Specific Tracking Class instructed by Canine Search Solutions.
